I would like to welcome all students, parents, and caretakers to the 2013-14 school year. The best resource we have in our school district is the people we employ making Lancaster City Schools the place to be for friendly and responsive staff members. Our staff is committed to building relationships with our students and parents and to providing an open, warm atmosphere in which to learn. We encourage parent involvement in our schools and provide easy access to our staff through email, phone calls, or individual conferences. To set up a meeting with a staff member, we do request prior notification so that our staff can make themselves available and prepared for a productive meeting.
Lancaster City Schools is also the place to be for safe and secure schools. No school is safe and secure for students if students are constantly exposed to bullying, violence, and substance abuse. This is why our staff implements research based educational programs to prevent bullying, violence, and drug abuse and provides consequences and further training for those who are involved in these activities. We have made school safety and security a priority in this district by being a leader in the area of planning and practicing for school emergencies. We go well beyond the state requirements for emergency preparedness by being one of the few schools in the state to use the National Incident Management System and use national consultants to assess our building safety programs and procedures. Our preparedness includes training staff and students on medical emergencies by being the only school district in the country to have multiple Heart Safe Accredited schools. This summer, we have made all of our school entrances more secure so that no person can enter our buildings without a staff person allowing them into the building during the school day. We also have a law enforcement officer on duty full time at LHS and officers in our other buildings on a regular basis.
Finally, Lancaster City Schools is also the place to be for academic achievement. Our district is rated in the top 5% of all school districts in Ohio when it comes to individual student growth. This means that more students in our school system gain over a year’s worth of academic growth than in 95% of the other school districts in Ohio. We are a leader in Central Ohio when it comes to providing a technology rich atmosphere to prepare our students for success in the 21st century. Each student at Lancaster High School is issued an iPad for learning and all of our schools utilize technology in the classroom to promote student achievement. Our elementary schools are part of a community early literacy partnership to ensure that all of our students have the support they need both within and outside the school day to have strong reading skills in the elementary grades. Our secondary schools provide a world of options for our students, whether it is honors and advance placement classes, on line classes, classes for college credit, visual and performing arts classes, special education, or foreign language, you can find them here. And since we have our own career technical school, (which is 1 of only 2 career technical schools in the state to graduate 100% of its students), students can combine career technical programs with any previously mentioned class, making Lancaster High School a Central Ohio leader when it comes to educational options.
All of these things, combined with our commitment to responsible budgeting practices, make Lancaster City Schools the place to be for the best educational value in Central Ohio. We look forward to another great school year in 2013-14.
