Welcome to Music Class with Mrs. Smith! I am excited to be your child's music teacher. Please click on your grade level to the left for an overview of music class, and see "View Blog" on your grade level page to read about our current focus.
Standards Based Grading: The grading scale for Music (and other specials) is S+, S, S-, and U. Please note - these letters do NOT represent letter grades. If your child receives an "S" it means that he/she is doing exactly waht is expected of him/her, working toward meeting the standards. It is NOT a B!! An S+ means they are exceeding the grade level expectation; and S- indicates that they are working toward the goal but just need more time to develop the skills. "U" indicates unsatisfactory progress. All of the assessed skills are averaged into one mark for the report card. You may think, "My child loves to sing - why doesn't she get an S+?!" There are music theory and history components to our course of study as well as performance goals. Students are not graded on behavior; however, participation is how their understanding is assessed, so if their behavior prevents them from demonstrating a skill, it does have a negative impact on their grade. You can view the Ohio Content Standards for Music here. It is a lot to pack into one 30 minute lesson each week! High expectations are set for each student, and earning an "S" means that your child is doing a fantastic job!!
